I’ve heard plenty of samples and beats in my day, but never one that sounded like forest animals in various levels of distress. But there are plenty of tracks in the other category, including “Hot Sauce”, “Horseride”, and the absolute abomination known as “My Truck”. The best tracks are the ones that don’t feature any of those country leanings – for example, “WiFi” is pretty solid. The tracks on BRELAND EP are mostly bad hip-hop songs with bad country aspects shoehorned in. But that’s where the compliments end, because the BRELAND EP is doodoo. Even so, it’s a shame there’s no plan for a Volume Three. So what Breland – I apologize, I mean BRELAND – and his team have produced here can definitely be considered “music”. Instead, End Of Tour makes a lukewarm Chili Pepper of a coda. The one red mark against their blueprint is that the album doesn’t finish with the touching I Love You Times Infinity. The Dears handle such disparate moods, genre fluidity and instrumental complexity with an architect’s precision. By contrast, Of Fisticuffs is a power surge of an anthem, a huge blast of driving riffs and tumbling piano chords. As the song builds, a pleasing grammatical twist – this band are rarely without lyrical wit – turns the track into one of unity. Until Deathrow, melancholic with its extended intro of harpsichord and military beats, disarms as Lightburn declares his almost sacrificial devotion. Volume One focused on screwed-up desire and damaging relationships the curtain lifts again half a year later, and we find Murray A Lightburn (a deep-voiced, deep-hearted Damon Albarn) and Natalia Yanchak (her vocals lo-fi cool) singing of commitment and tenderness, and the threat of its destruction. The two-part opus forming their sixth and seventh albums, is, in a sense, a rock musical about aspects of love with each song depicting a snapshot in a life. While not as famous as a certain other Montreal band who have a thing for strings and are led by a married couple (clue – initials AF), The Dears have been enriching the sonic landscape for more than 20 years with intelligently crafted, orchestral indie.
